Dataverse Information
UNC Dataverse is a trusted, institutional data repository for preserving, sharing, and maintaining access to research data assets produced by the UNC research community. UNC Dataverse is managed and maintained by the UNC Research Data Management Core (RDMC).
UNC Dataverse is first and foremost an archiving solution dedicated to research data in line with many funder and publisher data sharing policies and the FAIR Principles, ensuring that data are findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. The repository deploys the robust, open-source Dataverse platform for data preservation and sharing developed by Institute of Quantitative Social Science (IQSS) at Harvard University.
Sharing Data
UNC researchers and affiliates can create an account and begin sharing their research data by:
1) depositing their research data outputs in UNC Dataverse or
2) creating a searchable catalog record in UNC Dataverse that points to a data location.
UNC Dataverse is an NIH-compliant generalist repository for sharing research data: Generalist Repositories | Data Sharing
Key features include:
- Accepts multiple data types (e.g., numeric, text, geospatial) and any file format.
- Persistent identifiers and data citations to enable discovery and identifiability.
- Standardized metadata to support discovery and reuse.
- Long-term preservation and access with a robust repository platform, routine backups, and technical safeguards.
- Multiple licenses and custom terms to communicate appropriate uses.
- File restrictions and embargoes to control access.
Note: UNC Dataverse cannot accept sensitive data (i.e., PII, PHI, proprietary or copyrighted data); please see RDMC Add-on services for Sensitive Data support. Datasets over 2TB per project will incur Large-scale Data Archiving Service Fee.
Discovering UNC Research
Published and open data in UNC Dataverse are made available to the public and freely available; users do not need an account to search, view, and download files from open datasets. For any restricted datasets, please review the terms of use for data request and access protocols.

Including UNC Dataverse in DMSPs
Please feel free to use the language below to describe UNC Dataverse and its features within your data management and sharing plan. Additional information may need to be provided depending on the funding agency’s requirements, so please review relevant data sharing policies and mandates.
[Description of dataset(s)] will be deposited in the UNC Dataverse, a trustworthy, generalist data repository managed by the Research Data Management Core at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. UNC Dataverse provides persistent identifiers, robust standardized metadata, and is committed to long-term preservation and access of research data. Data are published under a CC0 license by default with customizable terms of use as needed. Additionally, UNC Dataverse is routinely backed up and preserved on multiple geographically distributed servers and is a member of Data-PASS, a community committed to the sustainability and access of research data.
If you need support in data sharing, please review the RDMC Add-on services and request an estimate for your proposal.
